Build it with Waxman: Ardex solutions for Waterproofing in Wet Areas

Build it with Waxman Collage Tile Collection - Ardex - April 2016

When installing showers and wetrooms, whether that be in new builds or existing properties, it is crucial to ensure that moisture sensitive backgrounds are protected from water ingress.

Why waterproofing is essential

Despite common misconceptions, cement-based tile adhesives and grouts do not form a waterproof layer; they may be water resistant, however they will still allow water to pass through.

As a result, water can slowly penetrate through to moisture-sensitive wall and floor backgrounds. With plasterboard for example, this can result in a loss of adhesion between the tiles and the surface to which they are fixed. In the worst cases, water could even leave the wet area and damage the substrate or backgrounds of adjacent rooms, or even affect electrics, causing the kind of damage seen in the picture below. For this reason, waterproofing is also an essential of British Standards; according to BS 5835-4:2009, in installations that are not immersed but are subject to frequent water contact, the structure behind the tiles must be watertight.

Note also that water may penetrate into moisture stable surfaces such as concrete/screeds and render and, although it would not damage them, the effects of this water may still be seen in adjacent areas.

How to waterproof a wet area

In order to waterproof a wet area such as an en-suite shower, wetroom or bathroom, ARDEX always recommend that a waterproof protection coat, such as ARDEX WPC, is applied prior to tiling. This will protect the fabric of the building from any possible water damage and give you and your customers peace of mind. It’s easy to do, doesn’t take long and guarantees your work for years to come.

ARDEX WPC Waterproof Protection System is a rapid drying waterproof protective coating that allows tiles to be fixed after just 90 minutes, and guarantees the prevention of water damage to floors and walls for 15 years! It can be mixed to a paint-like consistency and applied with a brush or paint roller, or to a thicker consistency to fill around pipes, plumbing fixings, junctions, and joints and gaps in plasterboard sheets with a trowel.

Included in the ARDEX WPC Waterproof Protection System kit is a FREE roller sleeve and roll of self-adhesive mesh tape for bridging gaps and joints; so you have everything you need for creating a waterproof area.

Waterproofing is essential prior to tiling in wet areas, and ARDEX WPC guarantees to protect the building from any possible water damage. Coupled with ease of use and rapid drying properties, ARDEX WPC affords professional tile fixers and their clients peace of mind for years to come.
